07 Feb Pilates Coming in March! (Pilates in Heston, Hounslow)
I know many of you have made the yoga mat your second home, finding balance and peace in your practice.
Now, we’re thrilled to be expanding our horizons. Sefali’s Yoga will soon be officially introducing Pilates to our timetable!
If you’ve spent any time in the wellness world lately, you’ve likely heard the word “Pilates” whispered in the same breath as “transformative” and “essential.” But for many, the practice remains a bit of a mystery. Is it a type of yoga? Is it a high-intensity workout? Is it only for dancers?
Whether you’re a complete fitness novice or a seasoned athlete, understanding what Pilates is, and why it has stood the test of time, is the first step towards a stronger, more resilient body.
So, What Actually Is Pilates?
Named after its creator, Joseph Pilates, who developed the method in the early 20th century, Pilates is a form of low-impact exercise that aims to strengthen muscles while improving postural alignment and flexibility.
Unlike some workouts that focus on lifting heavy weights or running long distances, Pilates is all about quality over quantity. It’s a “mind-body” discipline that requires you to be fully present, ensuring that every movement is performed with absolute control and intention.
The “Powerhouse” Philosophy
In Pilates, we talk a lot about the “Powerhouse.” This refers to the centre of your body, not just your “six-pack” muscles, but the deep internal muscles of the abdomen, lower back, pelvic floor, and hips. Joseph Pilates believed that if the centre is strong, the rest of the body can move freely and safely.
The Key Benefits: Why Should You Try It?
The beauty of Pilates is that its benefits translate directly into your everyday life. Here’s what you can expect:
-
Better Posture: If you spend your days hunched over a desk or a steering wheel, Pilates acts as the perfect antidote. It focuses on spinal alignment, helping you stand taller and sit straighter.
-
Deep Core Strength: It builds a “corset” of strength around your midsection, protecting your back and improving your balance.
-
Full-Body Toning: Pilates doesn’t just work your stomach; it targets the arms, thighs, and glutes, creating long, lean muscle rather than bulk.
-
Increased Flexibility: By combining stretching with strengthening, you’ll find your range of motion improves significantly.
-
Reduced Back Pain: Because of its focus on core stability and spinal mobility, it is often recommended by physiotherapists for managing and preventing back issues.
What Happens in a Class?
If you’ve never been to a class, you might be surprised by the equipment. We’ll be doing Mat Pilates, which uses your own body weight and a few small props (like balls or resistance bands) for a workout.
The class involves:
-
Concentrated Breathing: Learning to use your breath to engage your deep core.
-
Slow, Controlled Movements: You won’t find any frantic jumping here. Everything is deliberate.
-
Low Impact: It’s very kind to your joints, making it suitable for almost any age or fitness level.
Who Is It For?
The short answer? Everyone. Pilates was originally used to rehabilitate injured soldiers and later adopted by professional ballet dancers. Today, it’s used by everyone from elite rugby players (to improve agility) to retirees (to maintain mobility). Because every exercise can be modified, it is accessible whether you are incredibly fit or just starting your journey.
